Ameena lay asleep next to Chival. The bay mare with the bright white markings just lay there, her head was drawn up and her eyes were completely yellow and glowing. Her ears twisted this way and that as her companion slept soundly; knowing she was safe.
The bay mare did not need to sleep. Her body was accustomed to long periods of wakefulness, followed by nightmarish almost feverish dreams that made the blood curdle.
Chival preferred to just remain awake for as long as she could.
Her golden eyes turned to look upon the nearly pitch and ebony shape sleeping beside her. Ameena's breathing was slow and even, her face unmoving -- but perhaps a smile tugged at the corner of her lips. Chival gave her a soft smile. How meek little Ameena had been when Chival had stumbled upon her so long ago. How far had her love come.
In the mists of the forest, danger lurked. But the bright and fearsome eye kept them well away. With good reason, Chival was not marked as she was because she had been born this way.
She had chosen that particular way of life long ago. In a place long forgotten by all had she made a simple vow. One simple line and it was done and she became what she was."I, Chival, so unto wish to cross the threads of time and the fates' design, to give my soul up to the service of the

How easy the promise made. Her golden eyes shifted to Ameena's shape. How hard it was to keep it. Still she lay there, generating and absorbing warmth from her mate. She left out a soft short, ever watchful of the creatures that go bump in the dark.
And tonight, she was more than ready to bump back.
